This is the last piece of buffer art from 2023 that I have prepared (though I might pull some art from other projects to use as buffer since I'm now officially out of it). It's of two characters from my Ashmont Vigilantes world: Lucia and Dominic. You may remember Dominic from my first post on the Transcendent Trio, although he was only mentioned in passing. This is concept art from when he was in his late teens/early 20s, set several years before the Transcendent Trio storyline and in what I'm tentatively calling the CREWCUT storyline.

While Lucia/Ziyara's backstory is still under heavy development, the basic idea is that she's from a planet called Ootalax (her species is Ootalaxian) who was sent to Earth at a young age as part of her training to eventually be the Ootalaxian ambassador. She was given the identity of Lucia Carter, niece to Gerald Carter (the secret identity of a well-known hero called Captain Amazing), and began living as a normal human. She met Nic through his parents (Isabella Allard, aka Birdseye, and Anthony Allard, aka Dire Jibe), since they ran in the same superhero circles as Captain Amazing. Despite living in separate parts of the country, they became fast friends and would go on to form an unsanctioned teen heroing group together with some other superhero friends.

A few fun facts about Ootalaxians: they are shapeshifters with the ability to change every part of their body, except for their brains, their body mass, and their specific form of mitochondria (which is what allows them to shapeshift). Their natural form tends to be tall (7 or 8 feet) with skin tones on the blue/black spectrum, four arms, and six eyes with no visible pupils. While Ootalaxians can emulate the reproductive tract of any animal, their natural reproductive system is that of three parents: imna (contributor of ova), ishrrl (contributor of sperm), and ithos (bearer of the child). Babies are born without a sex, but most settle in a single sex for the most part by the age of 5. It is not uncommon, however, for them to change their sex based on how they feel about themselves, to fit the parental role they want to have in their child’s life, or a variety of other reasons. The vast majority of Ootalaxians are multisexual, since that's their natural reproductive state, although they have the same broad spectrum of (a)sexuality that humans do. Lucia's main gender is imna, which is why she goes by she/her pronouns, and she identifies as omnisexual (the multisexual label she liked best).

In this picture, Nic is shown to be Owlet, which is kind of the Robin to Birdseye's Batman. However, as I started fleshing out the pre-TT timeline, I decided I wanted that mantle to go to his brother, Connor. There are reasons for this that I won't go into right now, but the end result is that Nic is no longer Owlet, but Mockingbird--intended to the sidekick of Dire Jibe. I'm not 100% sure if either of them will be official sidekicks or "you can't tell us no" unofficial ones, though. Nic has always been uneasy with authority, which is what draws him to the punk aesthetic/culture. There's a lot about his backstory and personality that I haven't settled on, so I can't say much right now, but identity-wise he's bisexual, demiromantic, and polyamorous.

Anyway, that's it for now. I need to finish the model sheets for the Transcendent Trio, so I'm not sure when my next post on this world will be. But, hey, maybe I'll get inspired to do a vignette. Or I'll need buffer and so I'll show you the character concept art I have for a pre-TT visual novel game I want to make around the same time I officially start working on the TT comic. I guess we'll see! 😁

Never once, in all his thirty years, had Mr Thornton fancied himself in love. He told himself he was too busy, too rational a creature to fall prey to such unreasonable feelings; but the truth of the matter was, his very nature was not prone to romantic attachments, and in that, he was different from most young men his age. Oh, he was no stranger to other stirrings, of a baser, more shameful nature; he knew what it was to desire a woman, and while he had chosen not to act on it – out of necessity at first, after the miserable circumstances surrounding his father’s death, and then out of a steely determination to conduct himself as the gentleman he wished himself to be – those same feelings lurked still underneath the surface, coming back to haunt him at the most inappropriate of times. 

He had wondered on occasion whether he ought to go about procuring himself a wife; someone he could take to his bed with a clear conscience, and to give him children besides. Still, something had always prevented him from taking such a step: it was the memory of the deep, abiding love that had united his parents, a love he instinctively felt could not be found in a marriage based on reason and convenience. He would not disrespect any young lady of his acquaintance by offering for her when his heart was not engaged; nor would he disrespect himself by seeking out the sort of arrangement which was common among men of his station, to satisfy his urges only. 

And so it was, until the very moment he first laid eyes on Miss Hale. Those tender feelings he had never experienced before came to him all at once, and he was left shocked and trembling in their wake; she captivated him, mind, body, and soul, and while he sometimes resented her for it, he was powerless to do anything about it. Nothing could have prepared him for her brutal rejection, but still, his feelings for her did not abate; even the undeniable proof of her unmaidenliness could not shake them entirely, and so they lived on, soured as they were, but never forgotten. 

Then at long last, as he was pressing a dried rose into her palm, her eyes wide with wonder and a tenderness such as he had never dared to hope to see turned towards himself, he knew the sweet happiness of love returned, and was content.

Eighteen years Margaret had lived without knowing the indignity of being subjected to a man’s declarations, and all at once, she felt sure she would have happily gone on unaware for the rest of her days. It offended her that any man could think of her in such a way, even more so one she had come to consider as a friend; for all that she had been describing to him how her ideal wedding would unfold, she could not quite picture herself inside the fantasy, nor could she imagine the sort of man who would be standing beside her on such an occasion. 

She was sorry she had wounded him; and yet, she did not regret the substance of her refusal, if not the very words in which it had been delivered. She had to be true to herself, first and foremost; she did not love him, and therefore could not have accepted him, nor would she give him any hope that she might at some distant point in the future. Those tender feelings Edith had described to her at length over the course of her acquaintance first, and engagement later, to Captain Lennox, they were simply not there; not for Mr Lennox, nor for any other gentleman of her acquaintance, no matter how handsome his looks or pleasing his manner. 

And later still, when Mr Thornton came to pay his addresses to her, she could feel nothing but repugnance at the words that came out of his mouth; for she was sure she had never once encouraged him, and in her agitated state, she could more readily perceive the insult than the honour of receiving such a proposal. For any other man to take this kind of liberty, it would have been all but intolerable; that Mr Thornton of all people would mistake her natural compassion for her fellow creatures with a romantic inclination on her part, it was unpardonable, and further proof of the kind of man he was. 

Many years down the line, as she would think back of those times, she would feel sure she did not, could not have loved him then. She did not know him for who he truly was, and while she had never been indifferent for him, it was only several weeks into their marriage that she could finally put a name to those stirrings he had provoked in her since the beginning of their acquaintance. For she desired him long before she liked him, before she even knew that a woman might wish to lie with a man in such a way; but she did not come to love him until much later, as she finally understood what kind of man he was, even when she held no hope of ever restoring his good opinion of her. 

Those tender feelings she had scorned coming from him, she finally knew for herself, and carried in her heart always, though he was lost to her forever. And then, he was not, and she could not look at him, heartbeat fluttering like a bird inside her ribcage as she slowly came to lay her head on his shoulder, where it belonged.

On a belated honeymoon in Cadiz, John and Margaret would discuss at length the nature of their mutual attachment, and compare it with Frederick’s baffled remarks concerning their respective lack of any prior romantic inclination whatsoever. John would raise his eyebrows in disbelief at the suggestion that any man might come to love more than one woman in his lifetime; as for Margaret, she would quietly consider her new sister’s hushed confidences about a long-forgotten disappointment when she was very young, and treasure it in her heart for the time when she would have to offer her guidance to her own children – one of which she was already carrying, unbeknownst even to herself, the first of many she and John would welcome over the years of their marriage. 

Their feelings for one another, slow to awaken as they had been in their exceptionality, remained strong and unwavering for as long as they lived, their mutual tenderness an inexhaustible source of comfort and joy as they marched through hardship and toil.

The white-haired lady generally doesn't wear skirted outfits, but she found one she actually likes, and her friend is huggingly thrilled about it. For a clarification on the tags: The character on the right is aro-ace (indifferent), the one on the left is demi-ace(favorable), so their relationship is technically mixed-orientation by a small margin. However, they've been friends since age three, and that's the core of their connection. The character on the right has albinism and all that comes with it (lowered eyesight, photophobia, etc...), as well as a speech impairment caused by injury to her tongue and motor nerves. The character on the left is blind due to retinopathy of prematurity ( corneal opacification and detachment).

Re-evaluating and thinking things over, I'm not going to do Year of Whump Tropes' Living Weapon January event. At least, not during January. I just don't have enough fleshed out ideas right now and I'm really hooked in on Minna and Kyrie. Besides, New Year's Eve and the days leading up to it at work overstimulate me to the point I'm deregulated (dis-regulated?) for at least a week and a half following. Then I've got a big trip planned for the end of January, so I planned on getting ahead so I wouldn't be worrying about that. But with all that other stuff, on top of "life happens" things that are possible.

I'm still doing Feveuary 2025. That's been planned and thought out. So I'm going with my old plan of not posting once a week for January until I get all of those prompts written and done. Flufftember 2024 still needs to be finished and the Angstober 2024 masterlist still needs to be polished up and finished. I don't know when I'll have all that done with, but I hate leaving loose ends and things undone. Maybe during the slower part during my January trip I can get them done? It's a play it by ear kind of deal.

Basically, I'm trying not to overwork myself. My migraines may or may not have been effected by my cocktail of meds I've been on and/or just my body hating me with new imbalances. Either way, I've been having a hard time at work because of it. So voluntarily adding additional stress on myself to do a "nearly every day of the month event" on top of getting ready for another "every day of the month event" would probably be a bad idea.

Apologies to anyone who would have been looking forward to it. I'll do the prompts following the prequel eventually, just when I'm not overwhelmed. Might be a while since I still really don't know who'd be the MCs for it. Like, the parallel story for Cyrus and Sydney is already set there, plus their plotline is alongside Minna and Kyrie's, so like, honestly, you'll probably see more for them than you'll see anything for the prequel.

Btw, little tidbit, Cyrus is trans and Sydney is bi/pan (though she is demi-romantic). [for who I'm talking about, this semi-ish spoiler post explains more]

Done with the ramble. Now to bed because this weekend, though nice to spend it with family for the holidays, was tiring. Looking forward to giving you all your Christmas present featuring Minna and Kyrie! "100% pure fluff" did win both polls but "nsfw/smut" addition did get close on each so I'll be making separate posts, so y'all will be getting 4 drabbles out of this, lol. (Can't guarantee the latter will be out Christmas Day, but gonna try to make it at least by the next day).

Oh I have so many thoughts on aroace Curly, I think it brings so much on the table when analyzing the game's story.

Amanormativity ties in with the reoccurring mentions of the nuclear family, from Wrong Organ making 1950s mock advert posters, to Swansea talking about how getting a wife and kids didn't bring him any fulfillment in life.

In the cake cutting nightmare sequence, where Jimmy talks with Dream Curly about the mediocre cake, Dream Curly begins to talk about how sometimes you can only get the subpar stuff in live. Sometimes he'll get promoted, buy a house, fall in love. But other times he'll just have some awful fucking cake with his friend.

I think there is that subtle implication that Jimmy does buy into Amanormativity, with him projecting his beliefs on Dream Curly that a platonic relationship is lesser then a romantic one. But we never see Curly suggesting that he wants such a thing in the pre-crash.

With Jimmy thinking that Curly has everything in life, except for the desire (although I think Jimmy would view it as Curly not having the skills for it) to get a romantic partner, he would heavily lean into getting the one thing that Curly couldn't get in life to one up him.

THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM THINKING!!! AMATONORMATIVITY BE DAMNED!!!!

Looking at Mouthwashing through an aroace lens is interesting

"Jimmy thinking that Curly has everything in life, except for the desire", well said, well said! And references to the nuclear family fit in very cleanly thematically for Mouthwashing.

Jimmy leaning into amatonormativity is a smart observation. Jim internalizes all the social norms and standards on what you have to do to have a normal and desirable life, who sees everything Curly has and what Jimmy wishes he had, and is offended that Curly isn't satisfied, that he has the "audacity" to be unhappy. Curly meanwhile only wishes for his life to be something he doesn't have to run from, because by all means, he has already reached a point where he should feel accomplished, but isn't. Curly doesn't want to be a freighter captain his whole life, he doesn't want to settle with his sustainable position, he just wants to be happy. Like Swansea who has reached the "ideal" outcome of his life, having a wife, kids and a good career, it will never feel as good as embracing all what society deems undesirable yet right for you.

Jimmy does imply to seeing himself as lesser as a friend, "fall in love" being a goal and a "cake with a friend" being something he "has to settle for", it's all in the subtleties with underlying themes of "what you're "supposed to want" by society's expectations" against "what feels right for you". Jimmy is frustrated that Curly is going to "leave the dirt behind him", when in actuality, letting the crew and him go is the last thing Curly wants. Curly wants to be with his friends, he deeply cares about his crew, and about his close friend.

Mouthwashing as a whole reads to me as platonic through and through. Swansea and Daisuke having such a meaningful familial bond, Curly and Anya being sweet, playful and caring without romance, Anya and Daisuke having something of a siblings dynamic are dear to me. Also it's really rare to get to see representations of "toxic friendship" in media. Its always toxic romance this, toxic yaoi that, toxic family there, however in reality, friendships aren't excluded from being as rotten and abusive as the others, yet they're often overlooked. Jim and Curly are especially unique in this way. It's very impressive how they managed to showcase Jimmy's mistreatment of Curly in such a platonic way (at least that how I read it). Jim too, like Curly, in general avoids hints at romance and attraction explicitly related to him during his gameplay, not with Curly, nor with Anya (dear god thanks for that at least). It's all spite, annoyance and parasitizing off of these two. (That man's dry and lowkey hates everyone and everything) No attraction attached, no desires except hoping it hurts.

Curly to me is very much aroace, or at least on the spectrum. Like, the trivia fact that one of Curly's fondest memories is that of his friends putting in effort to make a shitty awful cake, tells us all we need to know on how dear his friends are to him. Platonic relationships mean so much to Curly, even when it's Jimmy fucking Mouthwashing, the worst friend ever imaginable.

Maya: You promised you'd let me show you, and it's legally binding because you said it in a court room!

Miles: That is not how the law works Ms. Fey

Maya: Shh just listen!

We see a panel of Miles' pensive face concentrating as he listens to "Hot to Go". He thinks to himself "hm".

Another panel zoomed in more. His pensive expression has grown more tense/confused as he listens to "Red Wine Supernova". he again thinks to himself "Hm" in a larger thought bubble.

We zoom out again to see Nick, Miles, and Maya standing together again. Miles stares forward blankly, eyebrows raised. Maya excitedly leans in.

Maya: Ok, that's her whole discography. So! What did you think?

Nick looks at him, waiting for his response

We get a panel of Miles, looking bewildered. He starts to speak "I..."

We cut again to see the three of them standing together.

Miles: I... don't think I like women?

Miles looks shocked and confused. Nick is bent over laughing, using a hand on Miles's shoulder to support himself. Maya looks outraged and appalled!

Maya: MR. EDGEWORTH! Just because you don' like her musi it doesn't give you an excuse to be sexist!

We see a panel of Miles looking stressed and confused. He leans his head on one of his hands, which messes up his hair, showing how he isn't his normal put together self.

Miles: I should rephrase that. What I mean is, Ms. Roan is clearly VERY assured in her feelings towards women. I was... unaware that anyone felt that strongly. I thought we all viewed these things with a vague sense of distaste and unease but collectively ignored it. Like how we do with climate change.

We zoom out again to see the three of them. Miles stands in the middle looking deeply uncomfortable and lost in thought, vibrating with unease. Nick and Maya exchange deeply concerned glances across from him.

With lingering unease, Miles begins to walk away.

Miles: Well, I should be going then. Goodnight.

Nick hesitantly raises a finger to point out an inaccuracy in that statement

Nick: It's four in the afternoon-

he gets interrupted by Miles who repeats firmly: I said Goodnight

Nick looks in the direction Miles walked off in.

Nick: ...He'll be ok, right?

Maya reassures him: Of cours Nick! I mean, what's the worst that can happen?

Jump cut to a closeup of Nick's hand holding Miles' letter which reads Miles Edgeworth chooses death in all caps. Then, below in smaller font, it says Also femininomenon was really good, thanks.

We see a panel of Nick glaring wordlessly at Maya as he holds the letter in his hand. Maya leans against the wall and looks away, whistling, trying to look innocent to avoid blame.

As a bonus, we also have a page that takes place a year later. Miles and Nick stand talking. Miles looks calmer now, and Nick smiles encouragingly.

Miles: In my time in Europe, I've been examining myself and my approach to law. Ultimately, the most important focus must be justice. We owe it to ourselves and to the people we serve

Nick: Wow, that's really inspiring Edgeworth. And, uh, hows the... the other thing going?

We get a zoomed in panel of Miles glaring menacingly at a suddenly nervous Nick

Jumping out again, Miles turns his back to Nick as he continues to talk

Miles: So as I was saying, justice is truly so important...

Nick nervously rubs the back of his neck wearing an awkward expression as he sweats nervously. He thinks to himself internally "Ooookay then, clearly still working through some things there"
